Muffs, Deli and Dogs

Muffuletta, Deli or Dog?  Why Yes, I’ll have another please! Add these three to your to-do list and you’ll be oh so happy.  Invented in New Orleans in 1906 by Central Grocery’s Salvatore Lupo, the Muffuletta (or better known as a muff by locals) is an over stuffed antipasto sandwich filled with meats, cheeses and topped with olive dressing – served warm or cold, take your pick.  Chef Donald Link takes deli up several notches at Cochon Butcher with new age sandwiches such as the Buckboard Bacon Melt with Collards.  How can a hot dog compete in NOLA? That’s easy when you choose from one of 12 sausages and 32 toppings at Dat Dog!

Central Grocery

Few changes have been made to the Central Grocery’s Muffuletta since its founding by Lupo Salvadore –a Sicilian immigrant – in 1906.  Lupo combined the ingredients of a Sicilian working man’s lunch – meats, cheeses and olives – on a single loaf of Italian bread and sold it to French Market workers.

Dat Dog

Extraordinary hot dogs are required if you want to compete in NOLA. And that’s just what Dat Dog has brought to the city. Dat Dog combines 16 generously sized dogs (including crawfish, alligator and 14 other traditional and non-traditional sausages & franks) with over a dozen toppings ranging from the traditional (relish, chili, onions) to the heavenly (guacamole, crawfish etouffee) and served on a jumbo steamed poppy seed bun.

For those of us who are slow to make complex decisions, management simplifies your experience with toppings recommendations based on the dog you order. Fries may be covered and smothered in …

Napoleon House

I love everything about the Napoleon House – from the crumbling walls covered in portraits of Napoleon, copper topped tables by the street, curmudgeonly service and the ever-present opera music. The Napoleon House is my essential NOLA bar and lunch destination.

Originally built as a home in 1815 for the Mayor of New Orleans, Nicholas Girod, the home was offered in 1821 to Napoleon during his 6-year exile on St. Helena. Unfortunately, Napoleon died before ….

Stein’s Market & Deli

Stein’s Market & Deli brought NOLA out of a 50-year deli draught and today serves the best Jewish and Italian inspired NOLA influenced deli and specialty sandwiches in the South – much to the despair of Atlanta & Houston.

The Fernando is my go-to favorite – prosciutto, house-made mozzarella & pesto stacked high on fresh ciabatta bread washed down with a Dr. Brown’s Cream Soda. If you are in the mood for deli….
