Johnny’s

Johnny’s is an excellent no-frills working man’s po-boy shop with few changes since it opened 60+ years ago. Food is served steaming hot on paper plates and there is counter service only. Service is friendly and courteous. They’ll call you when your order is ready for pick-up.

This is the only place I eat po-boys in the French Quarter. Established by Johnny and Betty De Grusha in 1950 and still family owned and operated. I ate my first po-boy at Johnny’s – my Dad sold them paper and his uncle’s business was down the block.

Johnny’s menu includes 46 po-boy’s. They also offer a dynamite breakfast, hot plates and muffaleta sandwiches. My Johnny’s go-to po-boy is the Surf & Turf – roast beef topped with fried shrimp. I order it dressed, no mayo, with ketchup, hot sauce, and extra cheese.

Located at 511 St. Louis in the block between Decatur and Chartres – the same block as Emeril Lagasse’s NOLA and The Napoleon House.
