Locals travel from across the city for Parkway’s super fresh po-boys. Walk into this neighborhood po-boy shop and you’ll have a choice of sitting in the bar or going to the rear and ordering directly from the kitchen and sitting in the main dining area.
Either way you’re about to eat one of NOLA’s best po-boy’s. Parkway Bakery & Tavern’s menu includes 25 po-boys and daily specials. This neighborhood gem was founded by a German baking family – the Goerings – in 1911. They began serving po-boys to the neighboring American Can plant workers in 1929. Closed in 1993, Jay Nix reopened Parkway in 2003 as a po-boy shop – he lived next door and sold his house to finance the business.
My go-to Parkway po-boy is a combination fried oyster and shrimp, dressed, hold the mayo and add ketchup and hot sauce. I eat at the bar and enjoy a house made bloody mary while waiting for my meal.
