I like the peace and quiet of Surrey’s Uptown location – an old house on oak tree lined Magazine Street, near Bordeaux Street. Serving only breakfast and lunch, Surrey’s is a great place to start your day, especially if it includes shopping on Magazine Street.
The menu ranges from eclectic to basic. Their crabmeat omelet is one of my favorite breakfasts – stuffed with avocado and Brie cheese, topped with a creamy lump crab sauce served with toast or a biscuit. Friends rave about the shrimp and grits and the bananas foster French toast.
All juices are fresh squeezed and daily specials are a great way to shake off last night’s cobwebs. Coffee is fresh roasted and first rate.
Expect to find lots of local color and a brief wait – well worth it. Service is very friendly and don’t hesitate to ask your server to recommend their favorite Magazine Street shops – the best t-shirts in town are at Dirty Coast, 5631 Magazine Street.
