Door open at 7:00 AM for omelets, biscuits, grits, eggs and ham at the one and only Mother’s on Poydras Street. Come hungry and choose between NOLA only omelets – Crawfish Etoufee, Shrimp Creole, Red Bean or build your own – or go for more traditional fare like black forest ham and eggs, biscuits with various egg and meat combos, pancakes and waffles.
Mother’s was established as a workingman’s cafeteria in 1938. This is not a service-oriented establishment – everyone is treated equally well or poorly. Order from the folks behind the hot tray line and don’t let the length of the line at the door deter you – food service is fast and the line managed with military like precision, note the USMC memorabilia decorating the walls.
I go for either the Crawfish Etoufee Omelet or I ask the folks behind the line to build me a Beef Debris, Onion and Cheese Omelet. Beef Debris is a Mother’s original –roast beef shavings that have fallen into the au jus gravy while the roast is carved for po-boys and cooked slowly overnight into an ultra-rich beefy heaven. Omelets come with grits and a huge hot biscuit. Recovering from last night – don’t forget to order a freshly made bloody mary from the cashier.
Located at 401 Poydras Street, Mother’s is walking distance from all French Quarter, CBD and Warehouse District Hotels. Mother’s serves outstanding po-boys and local favorites including Red Beans & Rice, Jambalaya Gumbo and Fried Chicken. Make sure to try the Ferdi Po-Boy with a cup of Gumbo.
