Stein’s Market & Deli brought NOLA out of a 50-year deli draught and today serves the best Jewish and Italian inspired NOLA influenced deli and specialty sandwiches in the South – much to the despair of Atlanta & Houston.
The Fernando is my go-to favorite – prosciutto, house-made mozzarella & pesto stacked high on fresh ciabatta bread washed down with a Dr. Brown’s Cream Soda. If you are in the mood for deli, go for The Rachel – Hot Pastrami, Swiss, Sauerkraut on Rye Bread with Russian Dressing $10.99
Get out of the French Quarter and head for the Irish Channel and Lower Garden District – any easy walk from the Jackson Ave. stop on the St. Charles Ave. trolley line.
Order from the counter and grab a seat at one of the communal inside tables – or, when the weather permits, outside on Magazine Street. Expect a line and hurried but friendly service. Serious coffee drinkers always grab an espresso or coffee concoction from the craft barista. Self serve cold drinks, beer or wine are in the self serve cold boxes.
