Extraordinary hot dogs are required if you want to compete in NOLA. And that’s just what Dat Dog has brought to the city. Dat Dog combines 16 generously sized dogs (including crawfish, alligator and 14 other traditional and non-traditional sausages & franks) with over a dozen toppings ranging from the traditional (relish, chili, onions) to the heavenly (guacamole, crawfish etouffee) and served on a jumbo steamed poppy seed bun.
For those of us who are slow to make complex decisions, management simplifies your experience with toppings recommendations based on the dog you order. Fries may be covered and smothered in any combination of toppings. Order food from the counter and all drinks from the bar.
I go for the hot sausage smothered in crawfish etouffee and anything else management wants to add. I can’t get enough etouffee, so I smother my extra crispy fries in it and grab a craft beer from the local rotator tap. You can go exotic with alligator, crayfish and veggie dogs, too.
Dat Dog’s roots go back to London, England where a long-term NOLA expat – Skip Murray – frustrated by local London hot dog offerings opened The Real American Hot Dog Company. Skip returned to NOLA in 2005 to deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and with his UK partner and a bit of local funding, opened Dat Dog’s first location on Freret Street. London’s loss is NOLA’s gain!
Dat Dog now has multiple NOLA locations – I like the original located in the heart of the Freret Street revival and just down the street from one of my favorite bars – Cure.
