Herbsaint

If I had only one meal to eat in New Orleans it would be at Herbsaint. This is James Beard Award winning Chef Donald Link’s marquee restaurant. Located in the Warehouse District on St. Charles Avenue, the vibe is upbeat, the setting is bistro-like and the food is farm-to-table Southern with a Franco-Italian twist. Trust me, it works.

Have a drink and chat with your server about the small plates vs. main course strategy. You can go either way or follow my family’s lead and order one small plate per person and share. Then move on to your main course and dessert. Don’t hesitate to ask the server if a small plate can be up-sized to a main course.

Our favorite small plates include: Gnocchi with Pancetta and Parmesan Broth; Louisiana Shrimp with Roasted Chili Grits; and Butter Poached Gulf Tuna with Pickled Chilies and Mint.

I like to order Muscovy Duck Leg Confit with Dirty Rice and Citrus Gastrique or fish of the day as my main course. My favorite dessert is the Vanilla Pot de Crème with Blueberries.

I always enjoy trying new wines and often opt for a wine flight rather than a single bottle for the table.

Reservations are a must and don’t hesitate to arrive a bit early and enjoy a cocktail in the small bar. Expect knowledgeable, prompt and courteous servers.
