Gautreau’s

Gautreau’s is hidden away on a small side street in Uptown– a few blocks from St. Charles Avenue. There is no sign – the result of a last minute welcome to the neighborhood ordinance decreed by angry neighbors, who swore the neighborhood would be forever changed for the worse. Boy were they wrong – in a city filled with fine dining choices, Gautreau’s is easily in my top 5. My great uncle lived down the block for over 30 years – if he were alive today I’m sure he would have a standing Saturday night reservation.

Small and elegant, dining at Gautreau’s should be done slowly – savor every bite and enjoy timeless world-class service. Reservations are a must and you may want to dress up a bit – not required, but dressing well just seems to feel right when dining here.

I almost always let the server guide me through the menu and usually end up with a daily special. Last time I was there I started with Crispy Pork Cheeks with Korean Chili Glaze, pickled vegetables, puffed rice and cilantro. Then moved on to the Parmesan Crusted Halibut with Champagne Beurre Blanc, fines herbes spaetzle, English peas and caramelized pearl onions. My wife had the rack of lamb and I was begging her for a second bite. I recommend ordering several desserts for the table and sharing the last with good friends.

As you enter or exit the building take a moment to walk to the corner and look left up Danneel Street at the wall of the Newman School Football Field – both Eli and Peyton Manning’s high school jerseys are painted on the wall. Newman, founded in 1903, is the only high school in America with two Super Bowl winning quarterbacks. The entire upper school numbers 300 students. Since I now live in Texas the sight of these two retired jerseys makes me laugh out loud. Eat your heart out Jerry Jones.
